Downtime and Maintennance

Postby Debillus » Wed Jan 09, 2008 7:46 am

The server that runs mistmoore.net experienced a blackout at around 1am GMT Tuesday morning leading to the untimely demise of the harddrive that holds the VMWare host and the operating system.

The virtual webserver is safely placed on a seperate harddrive and was not affected by this, but it took me a little time to get XP and VMWare Server installed again.

I will be pulling the plug at some time before the weekend to replace the defunct harddrive. Expected downtime should be less than 1 hour and will probably take place around 6pm GMT friday evening.

What kind of server do you have running, I might have something at work that I could donate...

To Matt's disappointment I must confess that my server hasn't reached that level of technology yet. It's only an AMD Athlon 64, 3GHz machine with 2Gb RAM and 2 HDD. One HDD holding the OS, The VMWare Server App and other Installed programs, the other HDD holding the VMWware data. (Currently 2 XP machines and one W2K3 server running virtualy). The W2K3 server is the one we use for mistmoore.net.

HDD 2 is regularly backed up to an external USB disk. Application backup from the MySQL base are pulled from a computer at a remote location every night at 3pm.

So to recap ... really nothing fancy .. just a PC with some disks in it. I have an UPS standing around somewhere I should probably hook up after this experience.
The disk that went was a 160 GB WDD, 2-3 years old, so I'm not that surprised. The important disk is less than 6 months old, and I swap to newer disks whenever I rotate and get the oportunity.
